On the afternoon of May 14th, 2012, as the ice was loosening its grip on the float homes in the bay, Yellowknife, the world’s Most Female Pilot Friendly aviation community in 2012, held a ceremony to celebrate its multiple awards.

In the arrival area of the airport terminal, members of the community, representatives of the Canadian military, many young women, and journalists were waiting impatiently to congratulate all those involved in making the “The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too!” event, an award winning success.

Delia Chesworth, Director of the Northwest Territories Airports, presided over the ceremony with opening remarks by Gordon Van Tighem, mayor of Yellowknife, David Ramsay, Minister of Transportation of the Northwest Territories, and the honorable Bob McLeod, Premier of the Northwest Territories.

“We are very proud that our airport and Yellowknife have received this recognition (“2012 Most Female-Pilot-Friendly Airport Worldwide”),” said McLeod before acknowledging the hard work and dedication of bush pilot, Kirsten Brazier, who organized the event, and congratulating the participating Trinity Helicopters pilots, the sponsors, and the volunteers who worked together to introduce 421 girls and women to aviation on March 10, 2012.

Mireille Goyer, founder of the Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week initiative, noted that the Yellowknife Airport aviation community and its local pilots took top positions in all the categories in which it competed.

Girls and women interested in an aviation career were encouraged to apply for the fifteen $5,000 scholarships available to Northwest Territories and Nuvanut residents through the Aviation Career Development Program.

Congratulations to everyone in Yellowknife.

A lifetime of aviation wisdom offered by Barry Schiff to reward a pilot or flight instructor

21 November, 2011 in Latest News, United States by Mireille - Intl Team Leader

Captain Barry Schiff

I have been a fan of Barry Schiff since I began taking flight lessons. Most flight training material that I found seemed to always fall short of truly explaining the whys of the facts stated. As outstanding flight instructors do, Barry offered more than information in his Proficient Pilot column in AOPA Pilot magazine; he offered insight.

Test Pilot: Everything You Thought You Knew About Aviation

Barry was rated Airline Transport Pilot at 21. He accumulated over 27,000 hours in more than 300 types of aircraft, earned every FAA category and class rating (except airship) and every possible instructor’s rating, and retired from TWA in 1998 after a 34-year career.

More than just a pilot and flight instructor, Barry achieved excellence in writing as well. Over 1,500 articles published in 100 magazines earned him 10 journalism awards from the Aviation/Space Writers Association and four special awards from the FAA. He also authored many books to share his insights with pilots.

The Proficient Pilot, Volume 1

Encouraging people to learn to fly is personal for Barry. In October 2011, he announced a writing contest with a $3000 scholarship prize. The deadline for the contest is December 15, 2011. Get writing!

Recognizing that pilots who introduce people to flying are very special, Barry is offering his entire set of books to one pilot or flight instructor who introduces 5 or more girls or women to flying in the United States during the 2012 Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week (March 5-11 2012). What’s more, he will inscribe the books and personally send them to the winner. Priceless!

I am thrilled to know that one of the many generous and dedicated U.S. based pilots and flight instructors who participate to the 2012 Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week celebration will receive a lifetime of Barry Schiff’s aviation wisdom. Thank you, Barry, for this special gift.

Several thousands girls and women discover that aviation is for them too

Taking flight for the first time in Port Lavaca, TX

“What fantastic days – you should read some of the quotes they have.  They just didn’t know girls can fly,” remarks Dianne Stanger of Port Lavaca, TX, United States, who single handedly introduced 98 girls and women involved in local non-profit organizations to the joys of flying during the first annual Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week.

We want to meet you in Billings, MT

Thanks to dedicated pilots and aviation enthusiasts, a few thousands more know that aviation is for them too on three continents! What a successful first annual Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week.

Hangar flying party in Renton, WA

98% of the girls and women who participated to “Fly It Forward” events answered “Yes” when asked in a follow-up survey if they would consider becoming involved in aviation as a result of the experience. 100% of the pilots surveyed responded that they are planning to participate in the 2012 Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week.

Let's go fly in Oshawa, ON

There were so many articles in the local and main media that I am still trying to catch up to create a list. What a great communication job each one of you did. And that’s not all. Many of the 707 girls and women who went on their first flight during the 2011 Women Of Aviation Worldwide week (nearly 1% of the women pilot population worldwide) shared the photos of their first flights on various popular social media websites. Our message was heard well beyond the airport fence.

Discovering flying with Patricia in Ghana

More than just introductory flights. Some museums had special exhibits about the women of aviation, several offered an opportunity to meet and listen to some prominent women of aviation, at some airports, local girls and women were given an opportunity to meet all-female flight crews who flew in, and at other airports, the week was celebrated with big girl hangar flying parties. Thousands of girls and women got a chance to witness that women do have a place in aviation.

Too much fun in Frederick, MD

I encourage you to read the many quotes of first flight candidates, pilots, and event organizers. Be inspired.

Winners of the various trophies and prizes will be revealed on April 4 2011.

And yes, there is an official Women Of Aviation Week Cake!

14 March, 2011 in Latest News, United States by Mireille - Intl Team Leader

Official Women Of Aviation Week Cake

The city of Oshawa proclaimed March 7 to 13, 2011 as ‘Women Of Aviation Week’. Arlington created the official Women Of Aviation Week Cake!

When I arrived in Arlington, WA, on Saturday, I did see the cake. However, it was a popular attraction at the Out Of the Blue Aviation event. “Women Of Aviation” was all that remained by early afternoon. Today, Cathy, Out of the Blue Aviation owner and event organizer, sent me the before photo.

Have you seen a better looking cake?

First flight candidate in the REMOS airplane

The cake was not the only attraction at the Arlington event. There was talking about flying or just life over hot chocolate and espresso and of course going on a flight for the first time.

Marla, one of the pilots who flew tiredlessly

The REMOS Light Sport barely stopped long enough to take another first flight candidate. The helicopter was also a popular choice. There were many more aircraft. I can’t wait to get the final count but I already know that over 150 first flights took place on Saturday in Arlington.
